Pampering your pet with a birthday cake is a great way to celebrate, but there are careful considerations to make when deciding to share this two-legged ritual with your four-legged friends. For instance, chocolate is dangerous when consumed by our pets, and they may have allergies or sensitivities to other ingredients typically found in cake.
However, you can safely include a cake in your celebration with a little creativity and some unusual “cake” ingredients. It’s best to go with grain free options, and keep in mind that most dogs will enjoy a cake without all of the sugar that’s added to traditional cakes. One of my favorite tips is to ice a puppy cake with sugar-free peanut butter, and top it with a few of their favorite treats. It may not sound appetizing to us, but it’s sure to be your pet’s delight!
Here’s a simple recipe to create the perfect puppy cake.
Ingredients
½ cup shredded carrots
½ cup apple, chopped into 1 inch cubes
½ cup oats or barley
1 cup ground beef, pork, or chicken
1 egg, slightly beaten
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl until well combined.
- Pour into 6” x 2” cake pan*.
- Bake for 35 minutes, until meat is thoroughly cooked.
- Cool for 20 minutes.
- Frost with sugar-free peanut butter and decorate with doggy treats.
*Doubling the recipe will yield enough cake mix to make 6 cupcake-sized cakes.
